Here we have a lovely antique solid sterling silver pocket watch chain, beautifully crafted and rich in character. Each link bears the sterling silver lion passant hallmark, confirming its quality throughout.
Although there is no visible city mark, it is most likely of Birmingham origin. The maker’s mark “H.P” is very likely that of Henry Pope of Pitsford Street, Birmingham. Based on this attribution, the date letter “C” would indicate a hallmark year of 1902.
This is a pleasingly weighty piece at 60.6 grams, with an overall length of approximately 13.5 inches (34.5 cm) when laid out.
The chain is graduated in design, with larger central links tapering to smaller outer links, giving it a classic and balanced look. The dog clip is in good working order and can be attached either to the end link or worn closer to the T-bar as preferred.
Due to its length, you would need a dainty neck indeed to wear as a necklace, so do bear this in mind depending on your intended use. It could, of course, be adapted for a longer wear if desired by added links or a chain extender.
A very attractive and authentic piece of history.
