Edwardian Snuff Box, 1902, Sterling Silver, Birmingham, John Willmot.

£180.00

A substantial Edwardian sterling silver snuff box, hallmarked Birmingham 1902 and bearing the maker’s mark JW, consistent with John Edward Wilmot of Birmingham.

The box has an elegant oval form with softly rounded sides and a highly polished plain exterior. The top is engraved with the initials “OVB”.

Opening the box reveals a particularly attractive hinged inner section, finely engraved with scrolling foliate decoration around a central cartouche. The smaller hinged compartment is decorated with a radiating fan motif, adding considerable decorative interest to the interior.

The Birmingham hallmarks are clearly struck and include the anchor town mark, lion passant for sterling silver and the date letter for 1902.

With a weight of approximately 59.2 grams, this is a pleasingly substantial piece of Edwardian silver with a lovely tactile quality.

Condition

Good antique condition overall, with expected surface marks and wear from age and use. The lid sits slightly proud by approximately 1–2mm rather than closing completely flush, and there is a small dent/deformation to one side. The hallmarks remain clear and well struck.

A handsome and substantial original Edwardian silver box, with particularly attractive interior engraving and strong period character.
