Presenting a stunning Edwardian Paste & Imitation Split Pearl Pendant Silver Necklace in Purple, White and Green which were the colours adopted by the Suffragette movement in the early 1900’s.
The suffragette colours: Purple for dignity, White for purity and Green for hope. They were chosen by Emmeline Pethick-Lawrence to create a unified identity for the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) and to visually promote their cause.
The necklace is in nice, as found, condition. Circa 1905.
The metal is not hallmarked but tests as silver, of probably a lower grade than Sterling.
Historians and antiquarians have long debated the exact definition of suffragette jewellery. While the colour combination of purple, white, and green was deeply associated with the movement, some argue that these colours gradually became so integrated into Edwardian fashion that many wore them without realising their political significance.
This widespread adoption, however, may actually highlight the success of the suffragette visual identity—it was appealing, marketable, and highly fashionable.
Yet, it seems unlikely that people of the time would have entirely disconnected these colours from the suffragette cause before World War I. The movement was widely known.
Wearing these colours was often a declaration of allegiance, sometimes provoking reactions ranging from support to outright hostility. The reluctance of some antiquarians to acknowledge the commercial success of a women’s political movement may also play a role in this historical ambiguity.

We give our items a clean over but not a “back to new” clean. Many of our buyers prefer it this way which is why we do it. In the early days we did clean everything so it was shiny again but we got “told off” so many times by clients that we now do it the quick way.
The reason being that it takes just minutes to clean 100 years or more of patina off when you receive the item should you wish but another 100 years or more to put it back on again if you prefer it that way. A long wait.
In the very unusual event any item we send does not please just let us know and we will sort things to your satisfaction in a jiffy!
As with all our items, we offer a no quibble money back guarantee (with return postage included if any do not match our description)
Please note: If delivery is to be outside of the UK you are responsible for any tax or duty payable to your country’s government. The exception being the USA where this item will be sent with President Trumps import tariff already paid.
