A particularly attractive early Victorian sterling silver vinaigrette by the highly regarded Birmingham silversmith Nathaniel Mills, dating from around the 1840s.
The beautifully shaped case is decorated on both sides with intricate engine-turned patterns, with a vacant cartouche to the front surrounded by engraved scrollwork. The shaped edges and small decorative details to each corner give the piece a wonderfully elegant appearance.
Opening the vinaigrette reveals a finely pierced and engraved gilt silver grille, decorated with an elaborate floral and scrolling design. The grille itself is especially attractive and remains in very good condition. Both hinges are in excellent condition.
The interior bears the NM maker’s mark for Nathaniel Mills, together with the lion passant sterling silver mark and Queen Victoria duty head. No date letter is visible, but the hallmarks and style are consistent with an early Victorian date.

Nathaniel Mills was one of the most celebrated Birmingham makers of small silver objects during the 19th century, particularly renowned for his vinaigrettes, snuff boxes and card cases. His work is widely collected today.
The vinaigrette is in really excellent antique condition, with the engine turning still crisp and well defined. There are the expected light surface marks associated with age and use, but nothing that detracts from what is a very appealing and well-preserved example.
