William IV Nathaniel Mills Sterling Silver Vinaigrette – Birmingham 1833

£395.00

A beautiful William IV sterling silver vinaigrette by the celebrated Birmingham silversmith Nathaniel Mills, dating from 1833.

This exceptionally well-preserved little vinaigrette is beautifully constructed, with finely engine-turned decoration covering the exterior and a small raised central cartouche engraved with an elegant period monogram.

Opening the outer cover reveals a remarkably well-preserved gilded interior together with a wonderful hinged silver grille. The grille is intricately pierced and engraved with flowers, scrolling foliage and leaves, providing a lovely contrast to the precise geometric decoration of the exterior.

Vinaigrettes such as this were fashionable personal accessories during the late Georgian and early Victorian eras. A small piece of sponge or fabric, traditionally moistened with aromatic vinegar or perfume, would have been kept beneath the pierced grille and could be held near the nose when required.

The vinaigrette bears the maker’s mark N.M for Nathaniel Mills together with Birmingham hallmarks dating the piece to 1833, during the reign of William IV.
Its condition is particularly impressive for an item approaching two centuries old. The engine turning remains remarkably crisp, the pierced grille retains excellent definition and the gilded interior has survived beautifully. Both hinges are strong and the covers close neatly and securely. There are only minor signs of age and use consistent with a carefully treasured antique of this period.
